RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- When a hamstring injury that required surgery temporarily derailed Ridgefield’s Megan Searfoss running time, she did the next best thing. She wrote a book that that offers training, nutrition, inspiration and race advice for runners.
Adams Media published “See Mom Run” in December. The book’s subtitle calls it “Every Mother’s Guide To Getting Fit and Running Her First 5K.’’ Searfoss’ wisdom, training advice and running tips can help any woman navigate the 3.1-mile distance.
Searfoss will talk about her book at the Ridgefield Public Library on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m.
“I did not have any intention of writing a book,’’ said Searfoss, who opened a retail store, Ridgefield Running Company , with business partner and fellow Ridgefield resident Deb Povinelli in October. “Right after I got injured the publisher contacted me and asked me if I could do it. I wrote while I was recovering from the surgery.”
Searfoss’ running expertise spans from more than two decades of involvement in the sport. Juggling motherhood, a career, a marriage and a home, Searfoss found running the best solution to develop fitness while also staying committed to other interests.
“Running helped balance the chaos of the work-life dynamic,’’ she said. “It added structure and routine to my days.”
Her interest in running led Searfoss to start the Run Like A Mother 5k series, “a race designed to celebrate and empower women of all levels to experience the gift of running as a means to finding balance in their lives,’’ according to her book. The race takes place annually on Mother’s Day in eight locations across the United States, including Ridgefield.
Searfoss’ 5k training plans are outlined in the book, which starts with “creeping” and adds in “crawling”, “cruising” and “climbing.”
“A lot of women are intimidated by the thought of running a 5k,’’ Searfoss said. “The strategy is to start slow, even walk at times, and continue to build endurance. It’s a lot less daunting when you have a training plan that allows you to slowly build your miles.”
“See Mom Run” includes a detailed chapter on strength and flexibility that will help runners gain fitness and prevent injuries. Her book also has chapters on nutrition, injury prevention and pre-race and race-day strategies.

Besides the Run Like A Mother series, Searfoss also has experience as a triathlete -- she raced in the Ironman World Championships in 2008 and 2010 -- and has run more than 20 marathons. She is also a certified running and triathlon coach.
“I enjoy seeing women attain their fitness goals,’’ Searfoss said. “If by writing this book I can help people reach their goals, it will have been worth it. They can do it. They just need to be shown how and have a little motivation. Hopefully they can get that by reading the book.”
