RIDGEFIELD, CONN. -- The owner of a local wine store will try and set the record for opening champagne bottles in one minute with a sabre -- yeah, we said a sabre -- next month.
Mitch Ancona, of Ancona's Wines, will attempt the mark Sept. 8 at the Ridgefield Library.
General admission tickets are $25, $10 for children 10 and younger. It includes sandwiches, gelato, pastries and beverages. VIP admission is $200 and includes a table for two with bottle of champagne, brunch, complimentary accessories and exclusive seating. Proceeds from the event will benefit the library.
Sabrage is a technique for opening a Champagne bottle with a sabre. The sabre is slid along the body of the bottle to break the entire neck away from the bottle, leaving only the base of the bottle open and ready to pour. The force of the backside of the blade hitting the lip breaks the glass to separate the collar from the neck of the bottle.
