There are about 40 lifeguards at the swimming pool at thecenter, which is operated by the Ridgefield Department of Parks and Recreation. Lifeguards range in age from high school students to older adults. They are all certified lifeguards who go through training for CPR, surveillance, rescue procedures and how to care for someone with a head, neck or back injury.

"They scan the pool and make sure everything's running smoothly, they monitor the water slide to make sure no one gets hurt. They all do their part," said Hannah Egbert, one of the aquatic coordinators at the pool.

Many of the lifeguards have been members of the pool's in-house swim team. During the summer many college students returning to Ridgefield spend their vacations as lifeguards. In addition to keeping everyone is safe, the lifeguards also make sure that they enjoy their time at the pool.

"They work hard, they're polite and courteous and accommodating," Egbert said. "They want everyone to be happy safe. They're excellent lifeguards."

The 25-yard pool at the Recreation Center offers activities to both members and non-members. The pool offers adult and youth programs such as private and group swim classes, an in-house swim team, springboard diving, exercise classes such as water aerobics, kayaking, endurance training. You can also drop in for lap swimming for a great workout. The pool is available for birthday parties and special events. Egbert said that programs, such as paddle boarding, yoga and kayaking, are offered at the beach.

One of the big draws is the water slide with a spiral loop that is open on weekends.

"The kids are always asking about the slide. Even the adults go down it. They love it," Egbert said.
