Wilton, New Canaan Siblings Hiking Grand Canyon To Help Mom Fight Cancer

WILTON, Conn. — Siblings Bernadette Hess and Colin Coogan are moving mountains this week by hiking the Grand Canyon to raise funds and awareness for the Norwalk-based Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team For Cures.

Training for this event was a big challenge, the two siblings said on their Facebook page -- Hess lives in Wilton; Coogan from New Canaan -- but nothing compares to the challenges faced by patients with multiple myeloma, including their mother.

"We are hiking for our mom who is an inspiration to our family because she greets each day with a positive attitude and is always asking what she can do for us," they said. "This hike is for her; the strongest woman we know."

Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer yet it has one of the lowest five-year relative survival rates of all cancers. But while there is no cure, great progress is being made, they said.
