GREENWICH, Conn. -- Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and that means it's time to hit the road.

However, going anywhere these days, especially by plane, brings its own set of speed bumps particularly when it comes to packing. Which is why Daily Voice sought out the advice of Kim Orlando, the founder of TravelingMom.com and a Greenwich resident.

Orlando says just because you have that big ole' trunk and no one is charging for checked bags doesn't mean you have to take everything you own. Use a packing list to prevent over-packing (and possibly luggage fees if you are flying). Remember that what’s old is new again if you have the right accessories: necklaces, scarves, belts and cute shoes.

Her tips:

  • Pack one bag for each family member and then, if your trip includes a one-night hotel stay on the road, pack one bag with a toothbrush, pair of jammies and change of clothes for everyone. That way you won't have to unload the entire car just for the night. If the hotel has a pool (and if the kids have been riding in a car all day, don't they deserve a hotel with a pool?), be sure to toss the bathing suits in the overnight bag.
  • Food can be a budget buster if you are not prepared. Bring sandwiches for everyone, whether you're flying or driving. If you have teenagers, pack two. Include colorful snacks that are not loaded with processed sugar: goldfish, berries, green apples, and Lara Bars.
  • If you have a long trip ahead of you, pack a secret weapon -- something you whip out just when the whining starts to make you squint. Model Magic keeps hands busy, does not stick to seats or carpet and if you are flying, you can save the masterpieces in the barf bag to paint later.
