Sofia, Melanie, Amanda and August von Trapp, the great-grandchildren of "The Sound of Music’s" Captain and Maria von Trapp, have performed together since their youth, with a musical journey begun as a fluke in 2001.

During summer visits to their Montana home, their grandfather, Werner von Trapp, taught them the Austrian folk songs he loved as a child. When he became too ill to travel, they crafted a homemade recording to cheer him up, never expecting it would inspire a career in music. The von Trapps have been performing together ever since.

Their performances make room for melodicas and ukuleles, lyrics that can unspool in ten languages, twinges of Appalachia and Portlandia, and shout-outs to the Mamas & the Papas. They have appeared on “Oprah” and performed with artists including Pink Martini, Wayne Newton, Rufus Wainwright and Loretta Lynn.

“We want to honor what our grandparents had, but we also want to speak for ourselves in the most honest way we can,” they said.

Opening for The von Trapps is Danbury’s own The Band Dakota, comprised of three sisters: Erica, Nicolette, and Joelle. Erica is the group's lead vocalist, pianist, guitar and co-writer. Nicolette is the group's guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Joelle completes those tight triad harmonies, adds percussion, and is the band's official artist.

Over the past year, they produced their self-written EP, “Whoa!”

The von Trapps and The Band Dakota will perform at The Palace Danbury on Nov. 14 starting at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $30 and may be purchased online thepalacedanbury.com, by phone at 203-794-9944, or at the box office starting at 7 p.m. the evening of the show.
