Ridgefield Theater’s Summer Encore Series presents Verdi’s “La Traviata,” and “Aida” as well as Lehár’s “The Merry Widow.”
In addition to seeing these world class performances, viewers are given an unprecedented look at what goes into staging an opera at one of the world’s great houses. Met opera stars host the HD series, conducting interviews with cast, crew and production teams and introducing the behind-the-scenes features.
Willy Decker’s stunning production of Verdi’s “La Traviata,” starring Natalie Dessay as Violetta, will take place at 7 p.m. on July 24 at The Ridgefield Playhouse, 80 E. Ridge Rd., Ridgefield, Conn.
Led by Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi on the podium, “La Traviata” is the story of Alfredo Germont (played by Matthew Polenzani), a young man from a good family who risks everything for Violetta.
Renée Fleming stars in Susan Stroman’s new production of “The Merry Widow” at 7 p.m. on July 31.
The story centers on an attractive widow from a Balkan land, now living in Paris, discovering the byways of romantic attachment, the passing of time, the difficulty of amending lost opportunities after her husband leaves her a fortune.
The Summer Encore Series concludes at 6 p.m. on Aug. 8 with Luisi back on the podium for Verdi’s “Aida,” starring Liudmyla Monastyrska as Aida, the enslaved Ethiopian princess in love with the Egyptian warrior Radamès, sung by Roberto Alagna.
