Darla Shaw

Community Advisor

Dr. Darla Shaw is a full time professor of education and women's studies at Western Ct. State University. Prior to becoming a professor she was an administrator for the Ridgefield School for 38 years. As a volunteer she teaches classes at the DAnbury Women's Center and TBICIO and in the Danbury School System and serves as a job coach at the Prospector Theater. She is also an active volunteer for the Danbury Cultural Alliance, The Danbury Historical Society, and several robotics teams. Musically she plays with the Wilton Steel Drum Band, the Founder's Hall Band in Ridgefield, and runs drums circles for autistic children. She also is a local storyteller, takes on the roles of famous women in the area, and does living eulogies for people in hospice. Dr. Shaw also writes for the Ridgefield Press, travels extensively on humanitarian programs, and takes oral histories on people of interest. She has recently been featured in documentary, A Different Drummer, and appears in six inspirational videos for Hooplaha. Politically she is working with Dr. Jesse Turner, a fellow professor, on a quest to change what is wrong in education today; over focus on testing, teacher assessment, control by Pearson book company, and lack of creativity involved in the Common Core.
