New Canaan Inventor Is The Brains Behind The 'Battery Of The Future'

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Imagine not having to charge your cellphone for two weeks, due to a new, stronger battery. Or owning a battery-powered car that could go twice the distance of a Tesla with one-tenth the charge time (a Tesla currently needs six and a half hours to recharge and can go 200 miles before conking out).

Jerome Feldman, chairman and founder of Westchester-based Alpha-En Corp. believes it's possible thanks to high purity lithium metal and associated products his company is working on. 

The New Canaan resident is a lifelong visionary that brought the world soft contact lens technology in 1971 (with Bausch & Lomb); surgical staples (via U.S. Surgical) and high silica glass to store nuclear waste (via Duratek, which was later sold to the Carlyle Group).

His newest company -- which was formed in 2008 and moved to Yonkers in May -- has top notch scientists including a Nobel Prize-winning chemist and a team of dedicated researchers and management working on what he calls the "battery of the future."

Alpha-En Corp. doesn't make batteries but is behind the production of lithium metal, the key source of a battery's power. Even more remarkable: it's being done at room temperature using clean technology without substantial harm to the environment. 

Feldman, who came out of semi-retirement four years ago to pursue this venture, said his patented process basically makes inexpensive pure lithium metal, which is itself an oxymoron because lithium metal is expensive to buy and almost impossible to get pure.
